The Shul of New York
A Synagogue for Spiritual Judaism

"History will have to record the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Justice in June at The Shul of New York

The Shul of New York's Justice in June program is built upon the original Justice in June project created by Autumn Gupta and Bryanna Wallace in June 2020 after the murder of George Floyd.  It has evolved to become a deep dive into understanding systemic racial injustice to be better able to take action as informed allies.

The readings, podcasts, videos, and peer-led discussions that are part of each month-long Justice in June program have been a life-changing experience for many people from the Shul.

If you are interested in learning more or joining the next series, please contact Karen Seidman at karen@theshulofnewyork.org.

EmpOwer Racial Justice is the realization of the Shul's commitment to the ideas and actions necessary to create an equitable playing field in all aspects of life for all people, and to the fight to end systemic oppression and the creation of a truly anti-racist society.

We, at the Shul of New York, stand fully committed to doing our part in the struggle to end systemic racism. Step one in that process is to educate ourselves about the history of systemic racism in the U.S. and the continued efforts to oppress Black people and people of color.

Step two is activism. The Shul offers many opportunities to engage in this process individually and in community:

  • Check out our list of readings and organizations below;

  • Register for the Shul’s next Justice in June program: our month-long, group learning and discussion sessions — a transformative deep dive into history and current issues;

  • Hear from activist speakers on Shabbat and at programs;

  • Take action through the recommendations of the Justice Coordinator.

"The time is always right to do what is right.”

Martin Luther King, Jr.

SILENCE = COMPLICITY

Today, and always, we must never forget the lives lost to the terror of racism, excessive force, and countless other injustices.  We must demand policy changes, equity, and justice for all.  In order to bring about lasting change, we must speak up, vote, and fight the cancer of inequity, racism, and white supremacy.  The #SayTheirNames list is a work in progress and includes the names of Black people killed in the U.S. by police and by civilians.
